The route from Perungalathur
Join GST Road at Perungalathur and head north through Irumbuliyur and Tambaram to Chromepet and Pallavaram. Turn west at Pallavaram on to Pammal Main Road and follow it through Pammal into Anakaputhur, where Kamaraj Street runs off it in Kamatchi Nagar.
The wrong hour is decided at Irumbuliyur. The railway bridge there is around sixty years old and too narrow for the traffic it now carries, the flyover over it has been through widening work, and the queue backs up a good way when it is bad. Long distance buses heading for the Kilambakkam terminus cross the same junction. The train sidesteps all of it, which is why four stops to Pallavaram often beats driving.
One thing worth knowing if you do drive: the Chennai Bypass begins at Perungalathur, and its first phase runs past Thiruneermalai, Pammal and Anakaputhur before it turns north for Maduravoyal. Both ends of your trip sit on that same corridor, though most patients still take GST Road because that is the road they know.
